3rd Conference on Associativism and Democracy

4 July 2026, from 15:30 to 18:30

The Municipality of Torres Novas, through CHUDE – Humberto Delgado Centre, in partnership with ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, CIES-ISCTE – Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology, the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the Portuguese Observatory of Cultural Activities (OPAC), is organising the 3rd edition of the “Associativism and Democracy” Conference, this year under the theme “Associativism – A Vehicle for Active Community Participation.”

The event will take place on 4 July, from 3:30 p.m., at CHUDE – Humberto Delgado Centre, in Boquilobo, and aims to encourage reflection and discussion on the role of local associations as spaces for civic participation, social inclusion and the strengthening of community ties. Particular attention will be given to the contribution of associations in tackling social isolation, especially among older people and those in more vulnerable situations.

The conference is primarily intended for association leaders, researchers and anyone interested in the subject, providing opportunities to share experiences, exchange ideas and actively participate in the discussions.

The programme begins with the opening session, featuring representatives from the Municipality of Torres Novas, the Union of Parishes of Alcorochel, Brogueira and Parceiros de Igreja, the Boquilobo Cultural and Recreational Centre, the Portuguese Observatory of Cultural Activities (OPAC) and CIES-ISCTE.

At 4:00 p.m., Maria João Lima (ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon / CIES-ISCTE) will present the talk “Singing in a Choir: Expressiveness and Sociability”, followed by a local perspective commentary by Choral Phydellius.

At 4:30 p.m., the round table “Associativism – A Vehicle for Active Participation” will take place, moderated by a representative from ISCTE/CIES, with representatives from the associations Cantares Vozes da Meia Via, Casa Recreativa e Cultural de Fungalvaz, Escola Viva Carreiro de Areia, Teatro Experimental de Riachos and Casa do Povo de Olaia.

The event will conclude at 6:30 p.m. in the CHUDE courtyard with a cultural performance by Cantares Vozes da Meia Via.
