During the First World War, the struggle also belonged to women. A group of high-society ladies volunteered to go to France as Red Cross nurses, also known as “lady nurses”. In addition to caring for the wounded and the sick, they carried out a mission: to build a hospital. Despite setbacks and obstacles, and in the face of growing resistance from the Republic, the Ladies succeeded in opening the hospital doors on April 9th, 1918 — the very day the Battle of La Lys began.
