According to historical sources, as early as the first half of the 18th century, the Portuguese Navy already had a “military music” ensemble known as the charamela. Over the years, the Portuguese Navy Band has carried out work of significant public interest, both in military ceremonies and State protocol, as well as in the cultural sphere, with numerous performances throughout mainland Portugal and the islands, as well as in France, Belgium, Germany, Brazil and the United States of America.
Its ranks include some of Portugal’s finest instrumentalists, and throughout its history, several highly regarded composers have been, and continue to emerge as, members of the Band. In 1999, it was awarded the Gold Medal for Distinguished Services by the Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Navy.
In 2023, it was awarded the rank of Commander of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword, a distinction bestowed by the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Since 2010, the Portuguese Navy Band has been conducted by Commander Délio Gonçalves.
